⚠️Reason #1: It’s probably smart to stay away from cholesterol bombs :Eggs are the single largest source of cholesterol in the American diet. One egg has as much cholesterol as a Hardee’s Thickburger. And although it’s true that dietary cholesterol doesn’t have much of an effect on blood cholesterol levels (only about a 10% increase), that’s not the reason why we should be avoiding dietary cholesterol.

The problem is the pro-inflammatory and oxidative effects dietary cholesterol has been shown to have on your LDL. This in turn can damage the endothelium (the lining inside our arteries) and increase cardiovascular effects. Another recent study found that frequent egg consumption might be as bad as smoking when it comes to carotid artery plaque build-up. ⚠️Reason #2: Salmonella poisoning is not a fun thing to have: Salmonella is the leading cause of food-borne illness related death in the United States. More than 100,000 Americans are poisoned by salmonella-tainted eggs per year. So whatever you do, make sure you stay away from conventional eggs at all costs. Even if you don’t die from salmonella, the symptoms even from just getting sick are quite unpleasant. That being said, the risk lies mainly with conventional eggs. ⚠️Reason #3: Free-range eggs may not be much of a better choice: While purchasing free-range eggs over conventional eggs is definitely a step up from an animal welfare and immediate health standpoint, considering you’ll have lower risk of salmonella poisoning, studies have shown there’s not much difference in cholesterol levels between the two. ⚠️Reason #4: Consuming an egg a day may shorten your life:The Harvard Physicians Health study, which followed 20,000 doctors for over twenty years found that those doctors consuming at least one egg a day had a significantly higher all-cause mortality risk, which essentially suggests that consuming even just one egg a day is significantly associated with a shorter lifespan.

@from @mymeatlessmeals Veganized Beef and Broccoli (Mushroom and Broccoli) ♥️This recipe is incredibly easy to make and, oh, so tasty!
And more importantly, a lot of you probably already have most of the ingredients in your pantry/ fridge right now.
Mushroom and Broccoli:
• 250 g portobello mushrooms, sliced and grilled in a pan for about 5-7 minutes on each side. (Try to dehydrate the mushrooms as much as you can to achieve the meaty texture)
• 200 g broccoli florets, cut into bite size. • 2 tbs chopped ginger
• 1 tbs chopped garlic
• 20 g chopped scallions (green onions 🇬🇧)
• 1 tbs coconut oil
[sauce]
• 1/2 cup vegetable broth (lightly salted)
• 2 tsp arrowroot flour (or corn flour, but the finishing dish won't look as glossy)
• 2 tbs tamari or soy sauce
• 1/2 tsp black salt
• 1 tsp rice wine vinegar • 1-2 tsp organic sugar
• toasted sesame oil for seasoning afterwards
• white pepper
• 2 servings steamed rice 🌱
Instructions:
1. Make the sauce by combining all ingredients in [sauce] and set aside.
2. Sauté broccoli in coconut oil or any cooking oil you prefer for a few minutes. Since we cut the florets into bite size, the vegetable will cook much faster than usual.
3. Once the broccoli is cooked about half way, add chopped ginger, chopped garlic, and grilled mushrooms before sautéing until fragrant.
4. Add the sauce mixture you have prepared and fold everything together quickly.
5. Add scallions and allow to simmer for a couple minutes.
6. Serve immediately with a side of steamed rice.

If our iron stores are low our intestines boost the absorption of iron, and if our iron stores are high our intestines block the absorption of iron to maintain us in that sweet spot.

But this only works with the primary source of iron in the human diet, the iron found in plant foods ☘️ Our digestive system cannot regulate the iron in ingested blood - heme iron (found in animal products) ❌ The iron in animal foods can just zip right through our intestinal barrier even if we already have too much in our system 😱 We have no control over it. So avoid the (bad) heme iron in animal products 🍗🥓🍳❌ and stick to the (healthy) non-heme iron in plants 🥒🍋🌽💚

Only people with a confirmed diagnosis of iron-deficiency anaemia should consider supplementing their iron intake, and even then it can be risky. A recent study found that a significant increase in oxidative stress happened within the bodies of women on iron supplements, and so before going on iron supplements I would suggest talking to your physician about first trying to treat it through diet alone, by eating lots of healthy iron-rich foods, like chickpeas and pumpkin seeds and the other foods I listed here

An academic paper recently published in Animal Cognition has revealed that chickens are far more intelligent than we once thought.

After compiling the results of a number of different behavioral studies, neuroscientist Lori Marino concluded that chickens are capable of exercising some truly remarkable cognitive functions. One experiment demonstrated that newly-hatched chicks can count, and even understand basic principles of arithmetic. They can also perceive time intervals and anticipate future events. Other studies have shown that chickens are capable of reasoning by deduction—an ability that human children develop around the age of seven.

In addition to their powers of reasoning, Marino also found that chickens are able to communicate with visual displays and at least 24 different vocalizations. This allows flocks to develop complex social dynamics that are similar to those of human populations. Birds in a flock can learn from one another, and deceive one another to advance their own self interests. Chickens are able to self-assess their position in the pecking order and demonstrate self-control when holding out for food rewards. Both of these traits indicate that chickens possess some degree of self-awareness.

A chicken’s intellect influences its emotional life as well. Marino found that chickens are able to experience a broad range of emotions such as fear, excitement and anxiety. On the occasion of World Farm Animals Day, 3 activists had the number "269" branded on their skin with a hot-iron branding tool. The action is considered an attempt to bring to light the mistreatment of animals in the farming sector. The treatment of animals would require terminologies applied to the Holocaust in order to adequately describe the situation.
The calf's story has inspired a worldwide tattoo movement. At least a thousand individuals have had themselves branded or tattooed with the number 269. In a testimony a tattooed individual who was a tow truck driver narrated that the tattoo reminded one passenger of his grandmother's stories of German concentration camps.
The website 269life.com was created, following this protest. The protests were an attempt to end the anonymity of millions of animals butchered for human consumption. from @wearesovegan - One-Pot Winter Jambalaya: We just love the idea of throwing lots of delicious ingredients into one pot and experimenting with different seasoning and flavours. Our seasonal vegan version of jambalaya includes some of our favourite winter vegetables. It’s perfect for cold nights and the best thing is you can make the entire thing in one pot! The cajun seasoning gives the dish a lovely kick and a smoky aroma. Be careful because some cajun mixes can be very spicy, so you might want to try adding one tbsp, then testing the recipe. Enjoy, Roxy & Ben. Serves 4-5 people:
——Ingredients——
1 onion (diced)
1 large sweet potato (peeled and diced)
2 parsnips (peeled and diced)
2 carrots (peeled and diced)
2 tsp cajun seasoning
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
2 garlic cloves (diced)
pinch of salt
1 cup Basmati rice
1 400g tinned tomatoes
400 ml vegetable stock
1 tbsp dried thyme
1 tbsp dried oregano
coconut oil (for frying)
100 g frozen okra
small handful of jalapeño peppers (sliced)
For serving:
parsley
vegan yoghurt
——Method——
1. Remove the okra from the freezer and leave it to thaw at room temperature.
2. Heat a little coconut oil in a pot and fry the onion, sweet potato, parsnips and carrots on a medium heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
3. Add the cajun seasoning, cayenne pepper, garlic and salt, stir all the ingredients together, and fry for 3 minutes.
4. Rinse the rice in hot water, then add it to the pan along with the tinned tomatoes, stock, oregano and thyme. Mix everything together, then cover the pot with a lid and simmer on a low heat for 20 minutes. Stir the jambalaya occasionally to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
5. Add the sliced jalapeño and okra, then cook for 10 minutes with the lid removed or until the rice is fully cooked. Add hot water if required.
6. Serve with chopped parsley and tablespoon of vegan yoghurt

@vegan_universe - Last week, Argentina’s Casa Rosada (the equivalent of the White House in the United States) announced its promise to serve strictly vegan food on Mondays to its 554 employees – including President Mauricio Macri.

It’s believed the measure was taken to send a message to the wider nation and beyond about the health benefits of a plant based diet and protection of the environment by reducing the impact of animal agriculture. “The only thing that will defend us from an unhealthy diet will be behavioural changes in the way we eat,” says Secretary General Fernando de Andreis. “The purpose is to trigger a conversation about our food, our health, and begin to change our diet.”

. Argentina’s Undersecretary of State for livestock, Rodrigo Troncoso, defended the initiative as well, told Clarín reporter Pablo Losada, “Eating more fruit and vegetables is a good thing.” The move could be seen as highly revolutionary in such a traditionally meat-centric country.
