The Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Programme (EWCP) has played an instrumental role in helping the people of Ethiopia learn about and protect the rare and unique Ethiopian wolf, a special animal that lives only in their country. Click the link in the bio to check out a full presentation from our 2017 Fall Wildlife Conservation Expo where Dr. Jorgelina Marino discusses what it will take to save them. At one time saiga antelope lived alongside mammoths and saber toothed tigers. Today they are found in much smaller ranges in the Eurasian steppes. Saigas have the unfortunate distinction of having the fastest decline ever recorded for a mammal species, losing nearly 95% of their population between the early 1990s to 2005 from poaching for their meat and horns. There is hope though as saiga populations recover quickly and with help from our partners at @saiga_conservation, this ancient species will continue to survive. A recent study by shark researcher Dr. Alastair Harry reveals that, as suspected by many scientists, a considerable number of shark (and ray/skate) species live significantly longer than previously thought making them potentially much more vulnerable to overexploitation. Species longevity is a key criteria that needs to be taken into account in the management of threats to shark populations. Visit our partners at @maralliance to learn more about sharks and rays. Our partners at @ewasolions are celebrating an incredible milestone this week — their 10 year anniversary! 10 years protecting lions and supporting local communities in Samburu. 10 years working towards a future of peaceful co-existence between lions and people. We're so honored and proud to support Ewaso Lions on this journey. Male Adélie penguins begin the breeding season early by starting on the nest that eventually both partners will work on together. Both parents will take turns sitting on the eggs to keep them warm and safe for about 35-37 days. After hatching, the chicks will stay with their parents for about three weeks until the they're able to be left alone with a large group of other youngsters. The young penguins can swim on their own in about nine weeks. Photo by Susan McConnell. #adeliepenguins #penguins #wildlife #wildlifeconservation #climatechange #wildlifephotography

Painted dogs are intensely social animals that live in packs as small as a pair or as large as 30 dogs, though a minimum of six dogs are necessary to successfully hunt and breed. The female has a litter of 2 to 20 pups, which are cared for by the entire pack. Pack allegiance, such as pups getting first feed at a kill or members caring for the sick and injured, is an integral part of pack survival. Today is WORLD OKAPI DAY! Yet another reason to celebrate the beautiful okapi and our friends at the Okapi Conservation Project (@okapiconservation), for their critical work in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to save this shy, elusive animal; the okapi can only be found in the DRC! #wildlifewednesday #endangeredspecies #wildlifeconservation #wildlifephotography

Fishing cats are known as master anglers, the apex predator of Colombo, Sri Lanka for their ability to maneuver through the wetlands and hunt for their prey with ease. But in Colombo, the wetlands run right through an urban sprawl and remarkably, the fishing cats are finding ways to fit into this strange new environment. Learn about the work of @UrbanFishingCat on their brand new website. Link in their bio! Photo by Neville Buck #fishingcat #wildcats #wildlifeconservation #endangeredspecies #wildlifephotography

Great green macaws are an iconic species, being immortalized in images of pirates and warm tropical vacation dreams. But these beautiful birds are in trouble, losing over half of their global population in the past fifty years due to poaching, deforestation of their habitat, and the wild bird trade. At the Wildlife Conservation Expo 2017, Dr. Sam Williams from @araproject.proyectoara will be speaking about their work being done to save macaws. Photo by: Ara Project

African painted dogs dappled coats of black, tan, and gold, huge satellite shaped ears, and sophisticated family structures make them one of our planet's most unique animals. Painted dogs ranged through 39 countries with a population of over 500,000 through the turn of the 20th century. Today, however, there are less than 7,000 of them across 14 range states. To support our partners in their work to save these beautiful wild dogs, visit them at @painted_dog_conservation #painteddogs #wildogs #africanwildlife #wildlife #conservation #wildlifewednesday

Cheetahs are just as unique as they are beautiful. These cats can run up to speeds of 61 miles per hour without breaking a sweat, and they are the only large cats that do not roar. Instead they communicate with a whole repertoire of barks, chirps, and purrs. When greeting familiar cheetahs, these cats aren't that different from domesticated cats in the manner in which they greet each other: by licking, sniffing, and rubbing cheeks. Our partners at Cheetah Conservation Botswana work closely with local communities in Botswana (one of the last remaining stronghold for cheetahs) to improve community perceptions towards these fast disappearing cats. Spectacled bears, also known as Andean bears, are the only bear species found in South America. These arboreal bears prefer to avoid conflict, using their sharp claws to climb the tallest trees and rest in platforms of sticks and leaves. This cub is also using its sharp claws to peel back the bark on this tree to eat the nutritious second layer. Much of this vegetation is tough to open or digest for most animals, and the bear is one of the few species in its range to exlpoit these food sources. During breeding season, king penguins display the most interesting courtship behavior. The male king penguin unfurls to his full height, raises his bill in air, and makes a loud trumpet-like call, signaling his availability to female king penguins. When a male and female penguin "click" they call, bow, strut, and shake their heads in something akin to a dance! They will then stand facing each other, rise up to their full heights, and relax their bodies. Our partners at @globalpenguinsociety work to protect all 18 species of penguins, including king penguins! As their name suggests, Ethiopian wolves are endemic to the mountains of Ethiopia. These canids are the most threatened in the world and the only wolf species found in Africa. They are at the top of the food chain of the ecosystem in the area they inhabit, thus having no predatory enemies in the wild. However, widespread disease, habitat loss and other factors are contributing to their decline. Check out our website to see what we are doing to help save this beautiful species. A pod of hippos provides tons of ecosystem engineering power. These mighty river beasts submerge underwater (up to 5 minutes at a time) and bounce off the riverbed, churning up the mud as they go and changing the course of waterways. At night, they leave the water on single file pathways to feed, which creates trails for smaller animals to move about. Despire their enormous size, hippos only consume about 88 lbs of grass a day! How many hippos can you see in this photo from @niassalionproject? #hippos #hippo #wildlife #conservation #wildlifeconservation #endangeredspecies

Today is the Day of the Cotton Top Tamarin! This squirrel-sized little monkey is found in the forests of northwestern Colombia in groups of up to 9-13 individuals where their plant and fruit diet gives them an important role as a seed disperser. Whether by their messy eating habits or just digestion, they keep the forest fresh and rejuvenated. They've been listed as Critically endangered due to habitat loss and the illegal pet trade but luckily for them, our partners at @proyectotiti work to keep the titis safe every day and not just on the #DayOfTheCottonTopTamarin.
