So important to share what will be the consequence of human’s greed and short term gain. I hope people wake up and realize what an amazing planet we live on and how lucky we are. We owe it to the Arctic National Wildfire Refugee to preserve everything that is good about this country. #anwr #arcticrefuge #alaska #kaktovik#nodrilling #climatechange

The snowy owl is one of the most iconic birds in the arctic and one of more than 200 birds species that call the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge their home. Many of the birds of the refuge migrate to and from all fifty states and six continents to feed and rear their young. During the summer months nature flourishes under the never setting arctic sun, allowing birds to raise their young quickly in the short season. When winter sets in, many birds leave. The snowy owl is one of the birds that can deal with the harsh arctic conditions, in certain winters however, when lemming populations plummet, even the snowy owl is forced to migrate south. In so called irruption years, they then can even be found in the northern states of the lower 48, where I photographed this bird along the Oregon shore. @florianschulzproductions #wildlifephotography #arcticrefuge #savethearctic #oregon #alaska #nikon #florianschulzphotography #birdofprey #wildlifeplanet #keepitwild

Happy winkaversary bouquet from my lovely partner. I’d been so stressed lately about the state of the world that even after seeing him with the flowers, I still didn’t remember the occasion. What a reminder to be in the moment and let go of the need to control outcomes, to be grateful and content with what is right here, right now, under my very nose. I can still care about the Refuge and the National Monuments and be present for the people (and chihuahuas) I love.

With excitement I photographed these two polar bears greeting each other on the newly formed sea ice in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. About 25 000 polar bears are spread across the arctic region of the glob – some 4700 enter Alaska. Whenever there is enough ice covering the sea, bears patrol the arctic ocean in hunt for seals. Once the sea ice disappears bears are forced to land, where they go hungry until the sea ice returns in the fall.
During the summer months many bears come to shore along the coast of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. They are stranded there until the ice returns. I am very worried by the recent political developments.
The U.S. Senate has passed a Republican tax-reform package that contains a provision to authorize oil drilling on the coastal plain of Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, exactly the place where pregnant mother bears return to den in large snow drifts during winter time and give birth to their young.
Unless the drilling provision is stripped from the legislation during upcoming negotiations with the House, it will be part of the final tax bill that goes to President Trump for his signature, and the fragile coastal plain would be auctioned off to the oil industry. We cannot let this happen! It is the first night of Chanukka tonight. As the holiday of light and miracles opens amidst the chaos of world hopes and fears, I find myself wishing so hard for a miracle: for us all to work relentlessly to save and preserve our world, all the beings in it, the land and the trees and the ocean, and living creatures, big or invisible to the human eye. May the Arctic Refuge be preserved a wilderness. May the national monuments remain intact and grow. May we respect the rights to safe and peaceful existence of chickens, cows, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, whales, coral, and every other living thing on earth. The redwoods, may they be safe and protected. Flowers. May all minerals rest at peace, undisturbed, in the womb of the earth. And may we humans be filled with contentment, ease, peace, and a willingness to just be another being, another species, not more not less important than any other on this earth. May we have a miracle. That is my prayer today. With love, Sigal.

The Brooks Range is too special, too valuable, too important for this greedy travesty. This is a large-scale intact ecosystem in a world of shattered ones; this is home to the last great herds of caribou, to countless clear watersheds, stretching on and on, to millions of acres of habitat for trillions of living things.
Here in the Arctic, as our weather gets increasingly unpredictable, as the future grows uncertain, we locals will need sustainable food and water more than ever. Our entire nation—all our citizens—will need wild land and clean water more with every season that passes. This is our homeland that our leaders are trying to give away, and we as Americans need to say NO. We need to lift our voices to this darkness and howl until they wake up and listen. —Seth Kantner, Swallowed by the Great Land

My friends, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, one of the last true wilderness areas in the US is facing its most serious threat ever. Right now, the tax bill being worked out in conference committee includes a provision to open the coastal plain of the Refuge to drilling.
Representatives NEED to hear from the public right now that they care about this place and don't want to see it opened to oil development.
Right now, almost all of the north slope of Alaska is open to oil development in one form or another. Shouldn't we leave just a little bit for future generations?

I don't want to see this area turned into an industrial zone, nor I'm sure, do most of you. Please take a few minutes and call these representatives and tell them "Please vote no on the tax bill as long as it includes opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil development!" Rep. The Arctic Refuge is one of the most pristine and vast wilderness areas left in North America. From the Arctic Ocean a prairie-like tundra landscape leads up to the Brooks Range. Every year the Porcupine caribou migrate to this specific spot to calf. 200 000 caribou flood the landscape. This magical wilderness is under threat as the Trump administration wants to allow oil development in the very coastal plane of the refuge, which plays such a vital role for caribou, muskox, wolves and a myriad of migratory birds. Opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for oil drilling was hidden in the GOP tax bill that was just approved by the senate. We need to speak up to protect these last wilderness gems for the next generation. On this day in 1960, "for the purpose of preserving unique wildlife, wilderness and recreational values...in northeastern Alaska," @USInterior Secretary Fred Seaton established the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, an intact continuum of six different ecological zones. This diverse spectrum of habitats and associated fish and wildlife populations within a single conservation area is unparalleled in the circumpolar north.

For decades, the threat of drilling in the Arctic Refuge has been very real. And for decades, people have spoken up to keep Big Oil and their drilling rigs out of the Refuge. Go to sc.org/savethearctic and tell Congress to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge!!

It’s our Arctic National Wildlife Refuge’s 57th Anniversary today. That’s 57 years of Americans choosing to protect this pristine wilderness, its wildlife populations (like the caribou herd above) and the people who depend on them. Within a current tax reform bill there are plans to open the refuge up to oil and gas drilling. Be informed, decide your opinion, and let Congress know what you care about. ・・・
