This book was on my list but I don’t remember why, or where I heard of it. I have been reading some really excellent Canadian literature over the past six months or so (shout out, #alicemunro !) and am really into it. ~

I and my mom went to the Writing Immigrantion Memoirs workshop and had fun chatting about ESL problems, playing with details and crafting our (future?) masterpieces. :D
Wanna join us next time, Toronto?

I wrote more about it in my blog, the link is in bio!
The next session will differ.

Do you read memoir? How do you feel about the genre?

If you’re looking for a good book to read through the final reaches of winter, try this one. It drew me right in - powerful & devastating, but with a sense of hope for new beginnings. I’m still thinking about it a couple of weeks later. #emilyreads #CanLit

"His life's most important decision was a grand-slam home run. He married an angel. Mitsue Margaret Sakamoto was his wife for 68 years. Throughout his married life, as he went about his day, he would repeat her name over and over again under his breath. Just the idea of her seemed to keep him going. "Mits...Mits...Mits..." he would whisper. He was meditating on her. She was his koan. She was his everything. I'm sure I'll live my whole life and never witness a love so necessary."

#februarysbooks18 Day 19: Books from your Country
One of my goals for this year is to read more Canadian lit, because despite living here my whole life and doing an English degree at a Canadian university, I've read very few Canadian authors, and especially few Indigenous Candian authors. Of this pile, Moneky Beach is the only one I have not read and I'm excited to read Eden Robinson for the first time

"The Break"
by Katherena Vermette.
#canadianauthor 🇨🇦
This book broke my heart big time. 😭 I cried so hard! But I 100% recommend it, because THE KNOWLEDGE MAKES US BETTER, even if it hurts. 👿 And hopefully you'll become more empathetic after reading it. It is a story of womanhood, but men totally should read it (and feel horrible after).
It is a complex and heartbreaking family saga, raising the issues of racism, sexism, poverty and violence. Katherena Vermette gives a voice to four female generations of an Indigenous family and people who affect their lives in any way. The book is very engaging because of the element of mystery, and readers should "collect" all the pieces to see the big picture.

The rest is on @goodreads. The link is in bio!

There was hockey, always hockey. We played street hockey on the road in front of our house – with two little metal goalie nets from Canadian Tire (where else?). We would smash and bash and body check each other into snow banks, and sometimes a kid who was catching his breath or who had a hurt leg would stand up on the snow bank and shout out the play-by-play.
-
“Frank Mahovolich to Dave Keon! Now back to Tim Horton! Horton passes to George Armstrong! He shoots! He scores!”
-
Sometimes it would rain and freeze and the road would be sheathed in shiny ice, and we would strap on our skates and try to play hockey even though the tire ruts would make it very hard to pass the puck straight. And some years, my dad would tamp down snow in our backyard and get out the garden hose and some old pine planks and make us our very own rink! That was the best, especially when he hooked up floodlights so we could play at night.

A 25 Year Journey: Publishing When The Moon Comes
-
One winter weekend we were all up in #Gravenhurst & my father (picture #1, dad centre, me in red), who is a big #storyteller, told us how he & his friends used to skate and play #hockey on a beaver pond near his childhood home.
-
That got the wheels turning.
-
I thought of the beaver pond behind Brunton’s farm (picture #2) on the Jones Road outside #Gravenhurst where our scout troop used to camp in the summer.
-
Of the pond in the bush where we used to #skate.
-
Of the magical moonlit night we tobogganed.
-
I thought of that snowy #Christmas Eve, toasting sandwiches over a fire high on a hill looking down over the moonlit forest.
-
Of the #backyardrinks and the street #hockey & passing pucks on Gull Lake (picture #3) in town.
-
It all came together as When the Moon Comes.
-
I wrote it and read it at bedtime to Daniel (picture #4, 1991) & Helena. But nothing else happened with it at the time.
-
That was 1992.

„Madness is only an amplification of what you already are.” / Margaret Atwood, Surfacing

I was disappointed at first when I finished Surfacing about a week ago. I wasn’t sure whether I got the meaning. I wasn’t sure about this book at all.
Thinking a bit more about it, I understand my disappointment: it is the feeling I got while reading. The narrator’s struggles are relatable to me and the way she handles it is familiar, too. It made me uneasy to read about it. Isolation and introversion, alienation from society, feeling emotionally awkward or even numb, the psychological transformation of coming of age in unsure times, her constant paranoia, the overall tense tone - Atwood has a way of making the reader feel uncomfortable. And with Surfacing, for me, she hit home. #margaretatwood #surfacing
