This is the place that fed my passion for the outdoors throughout my teen years. From hunting wood ducks, to bass fishing, or searching for reptiles; if I wasn't at school I was out in this pond or the surrounding woods pursuing something!

On our Manx adventure, we spent a fair amount of time along the intertidal zone.
I spotted this seaweed and kept thinking that it was Ascophyllum nododsum but it’s actually Fucus vesiculosus!! 😱 Algae identification fail.
Since I hung up my quadrat, my species identification skills have atrophied. 😞

There's still time to shop for Christmas gifts and support our museum! We have some cool items in our Gift Store that will make nice gifts for someone who loves birds. We have books about eggs and nests from Rosamond Purcell and Mamoru Suzuki with beautiful photographs and illustrations.
We also have a large collection of fossils and minerals from Ed Harrison's collection that are museum-quality (including a fossilized T-Rex tooth pictured here; stained-glass ornaments from local artists; collectable bird figurines; and Guatemalan handwoven items.
René Corado's inspiring books on his life story, chronicling his path from museum gardener to museum collection manager will also make great gift!
We wish you all a wonderful holiday season, and hope that birds and other wildlife stay in your thoughts – and are a part of your extended family – during this sharing time of year.

B-rex was one badass beast! Not only are all these teeth from ONE T. rex individual, but this T. rex has quite the epic story, too.

This specimen was discovered in 2000 by Bob Harmon, my coworker & preparator here at the @museum_of_the_rockies.⚒️It’s nicknamed B-rex in his honor (aka MOR 1125). In 2005 Mary Schweitzer & colleagues published an article in Science announcing the discovery of SOFT TISSUES in the marrow cavity of B-rex’s leg bone 😮🍖 Schweitzer was the first to identify and isolate soft tissues from a dinosaur. Prior to her research, the oldest soft tissue recovered from a fossil was less than one million years old, B-rex is 68 million years old! 😱

Okay, that’s not even my favorite part. It gets better. Know what the soft tissues turned out to be?? Medullary bone tissue, which is a specialized tissue grown ONLY in modern female birds as a source of calcium for the production of eggshell during ovulation. 🐣 YEAH THAT’S RIGHT! B-rex was a FEMALE and she’s the only T. rex specimen that’s been conclusively shown to belong to a specific sex. Does it get any cooler than that?! 😎💕😆

For decades, paleontologists have puzzled over the microscopic fossils of
Pseudooides. Turns out, they're related to cnidarians! (Anyone else see a resemblance to

Prickly pears (Opuntia sp.) had ripe fruit (tunas) starting around November here in Davis. This was a large individual growing near the arboretum on campus, with plenty of red tunas. Tunas (and the pads, nopales) are covered in clusters of fine, splinter-like spiny glochidia, so what I do is pick them with tongs and burn off the glochidia before I peel and purée them for use in various baking experiments. •

“Fossilized Nautilus" fine art bas relief. I love thinking about the world as it was and capturing those elements to bring into our own spaces. This piece is based on an actual Dactylioceras fossil, from the Jurassic period, approximately 172 million years ago. (This technically is not a Nautilus, but “Dactylioceras” isn’t as well known and just isn’t as sexy. Both creatures are in the same scientific class of “Cephalopoda”.) Such a fantastic specimen would most likely be in a museum or an expensive collection – thus I would personally never be able to own one. FN came about to see if I could create a faux fossil as artwork. .
.
I created this piece by laying down a background of plaster made from ground seashell. I built up the different layers of the nautilus by trowling Venetian plaster through various handmade forms. .

I was 2 hours early for work on Sunday by accident as I got my starting time wrong, RIP sleep! It turned out to be a happy accident, as I got to “dodo” this! The bird didn’t look very impressed though, guess he won’t commission me to do another portrait. :p
