When chicken math happens and you end up with 20 chicks in the brooder! Hoping for some pretty egg layers and mammas in the future, and maybe a friendly rooster ha!
We have 4 Appenzeller, 3 silkies, 3 easter eggers, 2 Wyandotte, 2 blue copper marans, 2 speckled Sussex, 2 barnevelder, and 2 blue mystery chicks
Chicken math got me...up to 12 chicks now. Picked up some blue French marans, 3 silkies, and a barred rock/ameraucana cross to go along with the Appenzeller and Wyandotte. I missed hearing all the peeps. Working full time again to make things happen around the property luckily the sun is out longer and I still get a little time to take of the animals.
Well I thought I was going to have to wait a while for some more chicks but my lovely fiance knew I wanted some Appenzeller Spitzhauben and I came across some near our beach areas. So we had a lovely beach day Sunday and picked up 4 Appenzellers and 2 blue laced Wyandottes on the way home! I am SO excited to watch these grow... and I think my brooder has a little more room
I really can't wait to have a dslr again, all the wonderful new things to photograph around here makes me have that first time joy all over again! Now at times our 5 hens out lay our ability to eat eggs quick enough so since moving almost a year ago we have made a few friends with families that I give our extras to and just seeing the appreciation from them makes me so happy.
No one told me how hard or expensive it was to get a homestead started. Next month it will be a year since moving and I'll post all the details of our journey so far then. It's been tough recently, realizing what you need to give up to make other things work is hard, and making due with what you got on hand sucks. But I know it will all be worth it in the end and it just takes time. Ps Larry is up to 100lbs at 9 months old!
Honestly some days are very hard and discouraging. But those days end and then you have the next day to make up for it. Animals always give me some happiness no matter what day I may be having. Betty decided to join me on the bench and I noticed how nicely her feathers came back in and now she is laying again. Small things keep you going too.
We have 3 cats living with us on our Homestead. But Loki is the OG that moved from the city with my dogs too. He has been the perfect farm cat anyone could ask for, calm around all the animals and a great mouser. He usually visits the neighbors' horses and explores around our land but past few days he's been inside sleeping feeling pretty lousy and has me worried. I have some herbal medicine on the way that will hopefully make him feel better in time for the lovely weather rolling in.
