Fridtjof Nansen: scientist, polar hero, political activist, diplomat, Nobel Laureate.
Nansen first became famous for his adventures, leading the first crossing of Greenland in 1888 as well as an attempted expedition to the North Pole. However, he became a Nobel Laureate not through his work in science, but in peace.
Nansen was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922 for humanitarian work that included repatriating prisoners of war, aiding those affected by famine and creating the ‘Nansen Passport’, which allowed stateless refugees to cross national borders.

Marshall W Nirenberg celebrating with champagne upon hearing the news of being awarded the #NobelPrize. He shared the 1968 Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Har Gobind Khorana and Robert W. Holley "for their interpretation of the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis". In the 1950s, it was established that genetic information is transferred from DNA to RNA, to protein. One sequence of three nucleotides in DNA corresponds to a certain amino acid within a protein. How could this genetic code be cracked? Marshall Nirenberg and Heinrich Matthaei produced a long RNA chain consisting of a single nucleotide. When this resulted in a long chain of a single amino acid, the first part of the genetic code "puzzle" fell into place. The remainder of the code was mapped out in the years that followed.

Terpenes are a large and varied group of substances that range from rubber and the solvent turpentine to the cholesterol in our blood. Leopold Ruzicka studied fragrances in perfumes and became interested in how they were related to other substances. In the mid-1920s he came to the conclusion that the substances were composed of the same building block, terpene isoprene.
By manipulating cholesterol molecules, Leopold Ruzicka succeeded in producing the male sex hormone androsterone and later demonstrated that testosterone also could be produced from cholesterol.

Leopold Ruzicka was born on this day 130 years ago, on 13 September 1887 in Vukovar, Austria-Hungary (now Croatia). He was awarded the 1939 Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for his work on polymethylenes and higher terpenes". Photo: Leopold Ruzicka teaching. Photographer unknown. ETH-Bibliothek Zürich, Bildarchiv. The two Nobel Laureates Dr. George Hitchings and Dr. Gertrude Elion 1988.

George Hitchings and Gertrude Elion's research revolutionized both the development of new pharmaceuticals and the field of medicine in general. Previously, pharmaceuticals had primarily been produced from natural substances. During the 1950s, George Hitchings and Gertrude Elion developed a systematic method for producing drugs based on knowledge of biochemistry and diseases. One of the first drugs produced by the pair was for leukemia and helped many children with the disease to survive. Other drugs they created have been used to fight malaria, infections, and gout, as well as help with organ transplantations.

Gertrude B. Elion, George H. Hitchings and Sir James W. Black were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1988 "for their discoveries of important principles for drug treatment". Photo: Wellcome Library, London. Photograph 1988.

Today we remember Princess Diana: a devoted mother, humanitarian & friend to all those in need of one #Diana20

Today The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry have paid tribute to the life and work of their mother Diana, Princess of Wales at the White Garden at Kensington Palace.

Accompanied by The Duchess of Cambridge, they received a tour from the Head Gardener Sean Harkin who designed the display and Graham Dillamore who knew The Princess from her frequent visits to the garden.

Their Royal Highnesses invited representatives from charities supported by Princess Diana, and they were able to learn about the impact and legacy of her work, which continues to resonate with so many today.

The White Garden, which opened in the spring, is planted with white roses, lilies, gladioli and cosmos to create a peaceful and contemplative space where visitors can reflect.

The Garden, located in the historic sunken garden at Kensington Palace, will remain open to the public until September. 📷PA

Ernest Rutherford was born #OnThisDay 30 August 1871 in Nelson, New Zealand.

The discovery of radioactivity in 1896 led to a series of more indepth investigations. In 1899 Ernest Rutherford demonstrated that there were at least two distinct types of radiation: alpha radiation and beta radiation. He discovered that radioactive preparations gave rise to the formation of gases. Working with Frederick Soddy, Rutherford advanced the hypothesis that helium gas could be formed from radioactive substances. In 1902 they formulated a revolutionary theory: that elements could disintegrate and be transformed into other elements.

He was awarded the 1908 Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for his investigations into the disintegration of the elements, and the chemistry of radioactive substances". Biography: goo.gl/lLrnJ

On this day in 1963, Martin Luther King Jr changed the world with his dream. And you? What is your dream?
King Jr saw humanity as a whole united by unyielding links of fraternity and common destiny, as he stated in his famous “I have dream” speech (28 August 1963). Today we pay tribute to his invaluable contribution to peaceful coexistence and dignity for all human beings, regardless of their race, sex, religion or social status.
On this occasion, we would like to invite you all to read this text by Mauritian writer Edouard J. Maunick entitled “Death, where is thy sting?”, published in the UNESCO Courier on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of King’s assassination. http://on.unesco.org/2nT8cn, and also to download for free the book "Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr - The power of nonviolent action", by Mary King http://on.unesco.org/2vlFpyz [PDF]. And of course, for those who may wish to read it again, here is the full text of King’s speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on that day in August 1963… http://on.unesco.org/2n7MX3

Einstein: "What I most admire about your art, is your universality. You don’t say a word, yet the world understands you!" Chaplin: "True. But your glory is even greater!
The whole world admires you, even though they don’t understand a word of what you say.” When Albert Einstein met the only person he wanted to meet in Hollywood, Charlie Chaplin.
They are famously quoted as to have had the conversation above at the premiere of "City of Lights" early 1931.
