Marvel's The Avengers [Page 3/3]. Tom Hiddleston expands on his role as Loki, whose jealousy of his brother, realization of his true heritage and askew desire to rule made him the perfect, conflicted antagonist. Hiddleston is fully immerse with Whedon's style and has the most fun with this role. And Samuel L. Jackson, having spent the past films as a cameo, finally gets to get in on the action and prove why the S.H.I.E.L.D. director is every bit as awesome he is. The visual effects also lends to the fun and stakes that occurs in the film and bring every bit of the action we only see in comic panels to life and it's glorious seeing that epic orbital shot of the team in New York or that elaborate tracking shot of them all combating the alien Invaders with each skill being put to use like Hawkeye's creative uses of his high tech arrows, Stark's Iron Man armor displaying more weapon gallore, Cap strategizing the battle and kicking ass, and Hulk making use of his immense power. Yes, the Hulk was the real show stealer. His introduction was genuinely terrifying as Banner struggles to hold back as it was awesome seeing him clash with Thor aboard the Helicarrier and Banner's now controlled transformation into the not so jolly green giant as he punches out the enormous alien serpent was the stuff to cheer out loud for. This model was a upgrade from the one in The Incredible Hulk as the artist found the right blend between the previous design and even the 03 Hulk in terms of the powerful leaps to deliver the portrayal of Hulk we all wanted to see on screen and the way Whedon handled his scenes we're perfect and added to the fun and humor. The Avengers is the crowd pleasing, benchmark crossover event that lived up to the hype and turned Marvel Studios into a industry powerhouse. Marvel's The Avengers [Page 2/3]. The cast we have seen Marvel cultivate over the years through it's first five installments are all great. They all flawlessly mesh together and make Whedon's quip-heavy dialogue and character driven writing pop as their characters make their shaky unions, find some sort of common ground, squabble over ideals and ulterior motive and learn operate as a effective team once everything goes to shit for them and Whedon's script and direction plays up their abilities and personas for excitement, fan service and laughs. It was a lot of fun just seeing these colorful (both figurative and literal) characters played by these talented people in one room before the big set pieces take place. Robert Downey Jr is still a snarky delight as Stark who butts heads with other such as Cap, who is played with the same straight laced demeanor yet innocence by Chris Evans. Scarlet Johansson who really come into her own as Black Widow and showcases the same high flipping badass skills from Iron Man 2 but with more depth to her and shows that even with her strength and skills, she is just a mere human fighting along with God and monsters and has her moment of vulnerability. Chris Hemsworth expands on his role as the mighty Thor who's purpose is to protect his brother no matter how twisted he has become. Jeremy Renner, who was introduced as Hawkeye in Thor, was solid for the role even though he had a more minimal presence here. But the real stand-out is Mark Ruffalo, who makes a perfect replacement for Edward Norton as the the tormented scientist Banner whose change at staying off the grid and keeping the Hulk at bay cut short to assist with the heroes only for S.H.I.E.L.D. to have other plans for him. He meshed perfectly with established cast and brought the most humanity, pity and low key, awkward sense of humor as Banner. #marvelstheavengers #josswhedon #moviereviews #risesreviews #superherofilms #crossoverfilms #marvelcomics #marvelcinematicuniverse #theavengers #robertdowneyjr #chrisevans #markruffalo #chrishemsworth #scarlettjohansson #jeremyrenner #tomhiddleston #samuelljackson #2012movies #2010smovies #paramountpictures #marvelstudios

Rises Reviews 🎥. Movie: Marvel's The Avengers [Page 1/3]. After four years and five movies of build up and well received introductions of the individual characters that make this literal, long awaited supergroup, The Avengers had finally arrived to the big screen in May 2012. Ever since we saw Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury at the post credits scene for Iron Man tell Tony Stark about the "Avenger Initiative", the hype was set in stone and this risky gamble by Marvel Studios has paid off in a hugely satisfying way. As we last saw in Thor, Loki, the vengeful god of mischief, has seemingly perished but has fallen into another realm where he has aligns with a alien race who tasks him to retrieve the cube-like artifact known as the Tesseract (used by the Red Skull and Hydra in Captain America and recovered by S.H.I.E.L.D.) on Earth. Upon arrival, Loki attack a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. facility and brainwashes several guards and a scientist to help him make way with the cube and forcing Fury to enact the Avenger Initiative by gathering recruiting Tony Stark, Captain America, having reawakened from being frozen for seven decades, and spy Black Widow to combat and capture him while scientist Bruce Banner, who is trying to keep the Hulk at bay, to brought in to study the cube and Thor returns to Earth to intervene. From there it's a battle between egos, ethics and motivations between the heroes that they have to put aside before Loki unleashes his alien army upon citizens and subjugate the planet. The film owes it's success with Marvel's hiring of a writer and director with geek credentials, which is Joss Whedon who did the impossible by staging a ensemble piece that give it's individual characters focus and room to grow while also delivering on their dynamics and striking action set pieces we expected to see from a movie this monumental. #marvelstheavengers #josswhedon #moviereviews #risesreviews #superherofilms #crossoverfilms #marvelcomics #marvelcinematicuniverse #theavengers #robertdowneyjr #chrisevans #markruffalo #chrishemsworth #scarlettjohansson #jeremyrenner #tomhiddleston #samuelljackson #2012movies #2010smovies #paramountpictures #marvelstudios

She feels the need. The need to speed. Here's Brie Larson at the Air Force Base in preparation for her role in the upcoming Captain Marvel. Her character, Carol Danvers, is a Air Force pilot in the comics and ends up being infused with alien DNA that grants her powers. Much love for her. #captainmarvel #brielarson #marvel

Ten years ago today, we were introduced to underpaid high school chemistry teacher Walter White (Bryan Cranston) who finds out that he has terminal cancer. Struggling to make ends meet and looking for a means to leave his family financially secure by the time he's gone, he uses his skills to produce and distribute crystal meth with the help of his former student Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) in his RV turned drug lab and ends up navigating the criminal underworld overtime. For five years we witness White transition from mild mannered family man to feared drug lord in a dark, compelling, and thrilling manner and it was Cranston's brilliant performance and the equally terrific writing/direction that made this one of the most watched, benchmark series of AMC and transformed Cranston, once the goofy dad from Malcolm in the Middle, a sought after star of immense talent. The unpredictability, dark sense of humor, startling twist and turns, engaging character drama and smart execution seen here defined the mood and style of this neo-western brainchild of Vince Gilliam and firmly put this show in it's place in pop culture and deep discussions for years to come. With all of that said, happy 10th anniversary to Breaking Bad. #breakingbad #10thanniversarybitch #breakingbad10thanniversary #crimeseries #neowestern #yeahbitchmagnets #saymyname #heisenberg #goddamnright #iamtheonewhoknocks #stayoutofmyterritory #nomorehalfmeasures #crystalbluepersuasion #2008 #2000sshows #amcnetworks

Captain America: The First Avenger [Page 3/3]. The one performance I wasn't particularly thrilled by was Hugo Weaving as the maniacal Red Skull. He wasn't bad but at the same time he written to be a generic world domination villain with a vaguely freakish appearance and without a reflection on how devastating and brutal the war was, I didn't feel any real emotional or sense or terror coming from him or Hydra as a whole once they're past zapping people. He is a terrific actor but the character was kinda weak. Director Joe Johnston brings in the same old timey sense of style that made The Rocketeer special 20 years prior and gave this film it's own personality and warm, grandiose treatment as Superman complete with a rousing, classic American hero score by Alan Silvestri that suits Cap. Even if it may not click with most modern viewers or touch on the real war-like atrocities, but I appreciated the effort he did bring him to the big screen and to set him up for future adventures in the literal future. Captain America: The First Avenger is a well done throwback adventure that benefits from Chris Evans performance and makes a fitting prequel to this shared universe. Rating: 7.5 out of 10. #captainamericathefirstavenger #joejohnston #moviereviews #risesreviews #superherofilms #periodpiece #1940s #marvelcomics #marvelcinematicuniverse #captainamerica #chrisevans #hugoweaving #tommyleejones #hayleyatwell #sebastianstan #dominiccooper #stanleytucci #2011movies #2010smovies #marvelstudios #paramountpictures

Captain America: The First Avenger [Page 2/3]. My other concern for the character was not only the look and representation, but the casting. Chris Evans, who was known for playing another Marvel superhero at the time (Johnny Storm/Human Torch in the two Fantastic Four movies) and a string of largely comedic roles, was not who I expected to see doning the red, white and blue outfit and carrying the shield. In my mind he was still Jake Wyler, the guy who came out of the butt naked and covered in whip cream, in Not Another Teen Movie and even he himself turned down the role multiple times after Marvel kept pursuing him and I'm glad he gave in. This is the most earnest that I've seen Evans and carry this movie completely with a performance that's against his type and showcases the hope, patriotism and fighting spirit Cap is known for without being jingoistic, which is played with in the character's USO tours before jumping into real battles. What separates his Cap from Tony Stark, Thor or Hulk is that he's not driven by ego or a will to inflict harm; this is a legitimate good guy and I was right behind him whether as the weakling he was once or the muscular super soldier he was transformed into. Speaking of the former, the effect used to digitally shrink Evans was amazing if not entirely seamless as evident with his introduction, and the effects artists also did their part with creating the 40s era aesthetic. As for the rest of the cast list, I really enjoyed Stanley Tucci as the kindly Dr. Erksine who is instrumental into helping our hero become the man he is in manner similar to Yinsen from Iron Man, as I did Tommy Lee Jones as the gruff Col. Phillips who doubted yet learn to respect Steve, and Hayley Atwell won me over her portrayal of the tough as nails British officer Peggy Carter. #captainamericathefirstavenger #joejohnston #moviereviews #risesreviews #superherofilms #periodpiece #1940s #marvelcomics #marvelcinematicuniverse #captainamerica #chrisevans #hugoweaving #tommyleejones #hayleyatwell #sebastianstan #dominiccooper #stanleytucci #2011movies #2010smovies #marvelstudios #paramountpictures

Rises Reviews 🎥 Movie: Captain America: The First Avenger [Page 1/3]. The road to The Avengers has been a pretty steady one. Each hero were properly introduced (or reintroduced in the Hulk's case) and the public has embraced them some way or another, but this built up to the game changing superhero epic wouldn't be complete without one of Marvel's first and iconic heroes. Set before the events of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, Captain America: The First Avenger takes us back to the early 1940s when America was in it's second World War a sickly young man wants to make a difference. Enter Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), a Brooklyn man who repeatedly tries to enlist for military recruitment but us constantly rejected due to various health and physical problems but his determination and willingness to do his part for his country catches the attention of Dr. Abraham Erksine (Stanley Tucci), who allows Rogers to enlist in the Strategic Scientific Reserve where he's selected for the Super Soldier Program. The procedure works and the once diminutive Rogers is transformed into the military's peak of perfection who combats the evil forces of Hydra, a rogue Nazi science division led by the Red Skull who has acquired an powerful artifact known as the Tesseract. I was nervous to see how he would translate to the big screen for the second time after the cheesy, disastrous and low budget Captain America movie from 1990 but like with Thor before it, I was surprised and satisfied by the execution of character by simply modernizing his appearance (it rather throwing it back with combat fatigues clad in flag colors), treating him with dignity and making him more than just a propaganda tool his creators concieved him as. #captainamericathefirstavenger #joejohnston #moviereviews #risesreviews #superherofilms #periodpiece #1940s #marvelcomics #marvelcinematicuniverse #captainamerica #chrisevans #hugoweaving #tommyleejones #hayleyatwell #sebastianstan #dominiccooper #stanleytucci #2011movies #2010smovies #marvelstudios #paramountpictures

Thor [Page 3/3]. Thor real credibility in the acting department comes with Sir Anthony Hopkins' Odin as he waxes wisdom a king should with his pleasant demeanor and could shift into his much meaner and bombastic side once he buttheads with his son over Asgardian code of honor. Probably a biggest, secondary breakout talent comes from Tom Hiddleston in his star making turn as Loki, who goes for a tormented, conflicted portrayal of the God of Mischief that adds layers to his character, who desires to take the throne of Asgard himself and win Odin's love. For his first outing, it's a suitably tragic performance in addition to carrying some of the smirking, deviousness the comic book character and Norse legend is known for and leaves us waiting for a expansion of his role in the series. In short, Thor is by no means perfect as the film almost feels like filler compared to the rest of the Phase one films as it continues to build up to The Avengers; but it's mildly enjoyable with good visual appeal. Thor [Page 2/3]. What makes Thor's transition from the comics to the big screen work the incorporate of the pre-existing science fiction vibe to explain and redefine the regal fantasy elements, which is signified by narrative stating that the magic utilized here is a form of science we do not understand, and tapping into the Shakespearian side of things with their uncharacteristic yet solid choice of actor-filmmaker Kenneth Branagh, a man with experience in Shakespeare adaptations, as director. Branagh was able to lend gravitas and degrees of levity with the depiction of Thor and the dynamic with his family or the Frost Giants and it goes hand-in-hand with the visually beautiful display of Asgard and it's kingdom. It managed to make something that would seem laughable in the wrong hands look extremely good and dignified and that's where the film worked for the most part. By the time we see our hero crash-land on Earth via wormhole, the majestic feeling is gone and we're stuck with a standard fish out of water story/crossed with fluffy romance that sort of works but takes away from the grand spectacle I wanted to see more of. Chris Hemsworth, who was then a unknown in the states and the only other role I recognized him for was Kirk's dad in 2009's Star Trek, made a impressive breakout performance as Thor and nailed the arrogance and hot blooded warrior's fury so well, as does as little understanding of Earthly customs that made for some light hearted laughs and eventual change of heart after a moment of despair coupled with his growing interest with Portman's Jane, which was a part in Thor's character arc I personally didn't buy and felt Portman, with all of her talent, didn't sold me as a scientist with her risky storm chasing tendencies that led to a chance meeting with Thor and giggling school girl astonishment of him in full gear. #thor2011 #kennethbranagh #moviereviews #risesreviews #superherofilms #marvelcomics #marvelcinematicuniverse #thor #chrishemsworth #natalieportman #tomhiddleston #anthonyhopkins #idriselba #clarkgregg #renerusso #stellanskarsgard #katdennings #2011movies #2010smovies #marvelstudios #paramountpictures

Rises Reviews 🎥. Movie: Thor [Page 1/3]. After witnessing the Marvel Cinematic Universe dapple into the tech-based science fiction of the Iron Man films as well as it's monstrous aspect with The Incredible Hulk, the franchise has decided to delve completely into the fantastic with their fourth installment Thor, the adaptation of the Marvel Comics series which in turn was based off the Norse mythology. The film stars Chris Hemsworth in his first outing as the titular God of Thunder and the Crown Prince of Asgard who is prepared to assume the throne in a ceremony, which is interrupted by the presence of the Asgardians old enemies known as Frost Giants who are seeking a ancient artifact. Seeing this as an act of war, Thor vows to travel to Jotenheim to retaliate, but the all father and current king Odin (Anthony Hopkins) advises him not to because of their peace treaty, so Thor acts against his father's order and travels to Jotenheim anyway with his brother, trickster god Loki (Tom Hiddleston), and his warrior friends in town to confront him a d reignites their centuries old war. They are eventually transported back to Asgard after almost getting killed due to Thor's impulsive actions and the All father strips him of his powers and banishes him to Earth as a mortal, where he encounters New Mexico scientist Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and her colleagues. He seeks to reclaim his hammer Mjolnir which is protected by an enchantment and guarded within a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, but first he must learn humility and prove himself worthy in time to return home and kept the treacherous Loki from claiming the throne. When I first heard that a Thor movie was in the works, my questions were "why?" and "how a comic this kitchy and out-there would translate on film?" To my surprise, Marvel gave the character and his mythology a glorious, better than expected presentation.
